NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) 357 Crescent Street provides a glimpse of a well-to-do late 19th c. American Waltham Watch Company foreman's home. This house, with its irregular form, complex roof configuration, richly ornamented entrance porch, stained glass transoms, and picturesque, conically-capped corner towers, ranks among the most elaborate examples of the Queen Anne style in Waltham.

As a reflection of the de- velopment of the South Side by the "Watch" in the second half of the 19th century, and as a well-detailed and well-preserved example of the Queen Anne style, 357 Crescent Street meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. This house ranks among the most elaborate examples of the Queen Anne style in Waltham, possessing an irregular plan characterized by projecting porches, bays, oriels and conically-capped corner tower. This house is sheathed in clapboards and patterned shingles. Particularly noteworthy is its front porch with paneled chamfered posts, and medallions at the porch's entablature and pedimented roof.

The briginal multi-panel double-doors are flanked by large, arched windows, with colorful staired glass fanlights. In addition to the alternating courses of clapboards and patterned shingles, this house features vertical and horizontal "stick" work above the 2nd floor windows, of the main and side facades. Projecting from the northeast corner is a square 2-story bay, with a lunette window at the bay's gable (1unette and stick panelling from a sunburst motif characteristic of the Queen Anne HISTORICA9L-SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. #357 Crescent Street symbolizes, in domestic architectural terms, the late 19th century prosperity of the American Waltham Watch Company. Deeds and Water Department records indicate that the house was built in 1892. On April 9, 1892, Frank W.

Wetherbee purchased this house from George L. O1ney. The O1ney/Wetherbee deed does not mention buildings on this property (Middlesex Deed 2155: 417), but buildings are mentioned in a mortgage deed between Wetherbee and a William Earl Allen, on Nov 3, 1892. ($5.000 mortgage for three years at 5% ). Frank W. Wetherbee, formeman, dial dept., American Waltham Watch Co. is first listed at this address in 1893. Prior to the early 1890's, Wetherbee lived at 72 Taylor Street and worked for E.W. Wetherbee, dial manufacturer, rear 42 Crescent Street. The conically-capped tower retains its slate shingles and copper finial. The central portion of this house is crowned by a hip-roof. In the center of the main facade's roof slope, is a double dormer.
