Hall House represents a locally unique combination of the towered Italian villa form with a truncated mansard roof. It is well preserved, retaining original clapboards, 2/2 window sash, bracketed cornice and two story bay windows.
It was built by a well known apothecary with a shop on nearby Moody Street, and serves to illustrate the development of the South Side in the second balf of the 19th century by the Waltham Watch Company. house possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, and associations, and meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Henry C. Hall House 1s a two story, clapboard clad structure enclosed by a truncated mansard type roof. Its most prominent feature is the offset three story tower that rises above the entry porch. Other features include two story bay windows, with pent roofs sep- arating the stories, adjacent to the tower and on the side elevation.
Sawn brackets define the cornice, tower, porch roof, and bay windows. Windows are simply framed and generally contain 2/2 sash; an exception is the pedimented window at the second story of the tower. Iwo and one story ells extend to the rear. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. 107 Crescent St. has significant historical associations with Henry C. Hall, partner in Hal1 and Lyon Co. Hall's business was described as "among the most prominent pharmacies of Middlesex Co., and pre-eminent in all that pertains to the drug trade in Waltham. The business was founded in 1868. At some point between 1872-1874, Henry C. Hall - built #107 Crescent St. He purchased the house's lot from Henry P. Sherman on July 30, - 1872 for $1800.00.
Sherman, in turn, had purchased the land from the American Watch Co. The restrictions of American Watch Co. deeds apply to the property (see 107 Adams St.) This land represents lots 469-471 on the Waltham Improvement Co. Plan of 1854. In any event, Hall and Lyon Co. was located at 117 Moody St. In 1885 it was incorporated with Henry C. Hall as president and George C. Lyon as treasurer. Henry C. Hall was born and educated in Waltham: Mr. Lyon was a native of Lawrence and was admitted to the partnership in 1884. The business had an excellent reputation. It was noted in the 1905 Waltham Souvenier that this store's "reputation for handling the purest drugs and chemicals and giving the best and most reliable prescription service is unsurpassed, while its line of toilet articles and preferations, druggist sundrees etc.
are complete and carefully selected." In addition, the premises included "an elegant soda fountain." By 1905 ten clerks were employed within store. In addition, a large store--the largest in Rhode Island--was also - maintained at Providence, Rhode Island, under the direct management of Mr. Lyon. #107 Crescent St. remained in the Hall family until at least the early 1930's.
