NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) This bridge is significant as illustrative of highway bridge design and construction asso- ciated with development of the metropolitan Boston water supply system between 1845 and 1926. The design of the bridge is unusual within the system, in that the arches of the three spans do not spring from discrete piers, but rather form the upper portions of openings which in cross section resemble sections of masonry aqueduct.
This,along with the Ash Street Bridge (D12-4) on the Weston aqueduct, constitutes one of two examples of this type of construction in the system. The Quinepoxet River bridge, with its three ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important design features and evaluatesh erms yaf othereet) structures within the community. This bridge carries Thomas Street over the Quinepoxet River in the village of Oakdale in West Boylston, at the point where the river enters Wachusett Reservoir. The bridge is about 32½ feet wide, 95 feet long and 20 feet high. A monolithic concrete base carries the three arched segments and serves as a "floor" , paved with stone, over which water moves as it passes beneath the arches. the bridge is sheathed with quarryfaced granite. The paving beneath the arches is extended about 25 feet upstream and nearly 60 feet downstream from the bridge to prevent scouring.
The approaches are carried on fill embankment and extend about 30 feet beyond each end of the bridge, for an overall roadway length of about 150 feet. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain historical importance of structure and how the structure relates to the development of the community. The Quinepoxet River Bridge was built in 1903 from designs generated by the engineering staff of the Metropolitan Water Board under Frederic P. Stearns, and was built in association with development of Wachusett Reservoir. Contractor for the work was George M. Atkins Co., of Washington, D.C. It is associated with development of the Wachusett Reservoir (see Area G) and the third phase of development of the metropolitan Boston water system.
