It 1s significant as a representative example of the early pnase oi tnree-decker development on the summit of Vernon Hill at the end of the 19th century, when the area attracted numerous Swedish families, and when many residents found employment in the nearby steel wire mills in South Worcester and Quinsigamond Village. The house is also a remarkably well-preserved example of modest, Italianate style three-decker design popular during this period. It thus meets critera A and Cof the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Architecturally, 4 Fairbanks Street is a remarkably well-preserved example of a simply designed, popular form of Italianate style three-decker built locally during the last decades of the 19th century.
The building has the typical side-hall plan and shallow hip roof, and is clad in wood clapboard. The asymmetrical main facade contains a side entry bay. A projecting, gabled entry portico supported by paired square posts appears to be a 20th century repiacement. Windows retain original 2/2 sash, with simple surrounds that feature rope molding on the caps. Regularly spaced brackets decorate the roof cornice overhang. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The Anderson Three-Decker is one of the earliest three-deckers on the summit of Vernon Hill, where a number of Swedish families located in the late 19th century. Many residents found employment at the Washburn and Moen South Works or in the Quinsigamond Works, both steel wire mills located nearby. Built ca.
1896, the house was first owned by Ludwig Anderson, a grocer, who also lived here. The building remained in the Anderson family through the 1930s. Tenants in 1896 included Anders Allen, a machinist; and Anton Anderson, a woodworker. Residents in 1900 included Joseph Anderson, a clerk; Peter Anderson, a wireworker; Victor Spongberg, a wireworker; and Edward Rosenblad, a machinist. Tenants in 1920 included John P.
