It is significant as a representative example of the suburban, multi-family residential development that characterized the Greendale section of northern Worcester in the third decade of the 20th century, when ethnic, working-class families continued to locate here, drawn by employment opportunities in nearby faciories.
It is also an unusually well-preserved, well-detailed example of Colonial Revival three-decker design. The Thomas Giguere Three-Decker thus meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIENIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Architecturally, 18 Fairhaven Road is a remarkably well-preserved building representative of the last period of local Colonial Revival three-decker design. The house has a typical side-hall plan, with a gable roof, and is clad in wood clapboard on the first story, and wood shingle onthe upper two stories. The asymmetrical main facade has a full-length first story porch that rises to three tiers in the entry bay. This is capped by a pedimented gable portico that projects from the gable pediment of the maun facade gable.
The porch is supported on each story by triple columns, and hs open central balustrades. On each story on the main facade, the porch is flanked by a triple window with 4/1 and 6/1 sash. Triple windows are also located in a column of three oriels that project from the west side elevation. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the roie owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Built ca. 1926, the Giguere Three-Decker was part of the last phase of three-decker construction in the suburban residential subdivisions of the Greendale area of north Worcester: Electric streetcar connections and the growth of nearby industries had simulated a residential boom in this area in the early 20th century, and many Swedish families located here as a result of the recruiting practices of the Norton Company.
By the time of the construction of the Giguere house, automobile commuting was becoming more widespread, and the ethnic character of the neighborhood was also diversifying. The first owner of 18 Fairhaven Road was Thomas Giguere, a machinist. Tenants in 1926 included Marcisse Grobichaud, a molder; and George Billington, an assistant purchasing agent for a downtown firm. Tenants four years later included Arthur Bishop, a helper; Joseph Bishop, a riveter; and Ernest Forsberg, a machinist with the Norton Company.
