Ingraham Three-Decker possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. It is significant as an unusual example of a stylish three-decker built to attract upper middle class families in the early 1890s, a period when its Main Street neighborhood served as one of Worcester's affluent residential areas.
Unusually well preserved, it is also the most outstanding example of Queen Anne style three-decker construction in the city. The Ingrahan Three-Decker thus meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Architecturally, 19 Freeland Street stands out as a remarkably well-preserved building, and as the finest example of Queen Anne style three-decker construction in the city. The house has the characteristic side-hall plan, with a side-wall jog, although the building's dimensions are much larger than average. The asymmetrical facade contains an entry bay with a projecting, three-tier porch, flanked by a three-story bay window. The house is clad in wood clapboard, with cut shingle bands between stories.
The three-tier porch is capped by a gable portico that projects from the building's hip roof. Thisgable contains a semi-elliptical light containing square, stained glass panes. A second gable portico projects over the first story porch. The porch is supported by fluted and turned posts with decorative curved brackets, and a Stick style frieze extends across the third story tier. Regularly spaced, curved brackets decorate the cornice overhang, and a corner bracket with pendant marks the bay window corner overhang. Geometric stained glass occurs in staircase and entry lights; floral patterns in the upper front bay window lights. The Ingraham Three-Decker is an unusual, early example of an attempt to provied fashionable, three-decker rental housing in a high status residential location. Built ca. 1892, and the first three-oecker to appear in the Freeland-Hitchcock Street area, 19 Freeland was developed as a residence for businessmen and professionals, most of whom were employed downtown. The owner through 1920 was Harry B. Ingraham, whose residence was listed as Boston, and later Oxford. The earliest known residents (1892) included J.P. Ravel, a physician; J.B. Hale, a springboard manufacturer; and Charles Kenney, a reporter. In 1910, residents included William M. Steele, a partner in A.H. Steele & Brother, makers of looms and loom supplies; Mary C, Henry, a school principal; and Peter Moriarty, an apothecary. In the 1920s, the building was owned and occupied by Thomas Hayes, owner of the Worcester Tarn Mill.
Other residents during this period included Edward Maguire, a clerk; and Robert Baxter, a machinist.
