Its boundaries follow the historic property boundaries of the subdivision lot on which the houses were built. The district is bounded on the north, south and west by vacant lots, and on the east by the abutting rear lot lines of Wall Street houses. It is significant as a representative example Wall Street area, a neighborhood that housed Irish, French-Canadian, and later, Syrian employees of nearby factories, as well as those who worked in the Franklin Street railyard and its warehouse district. The houses of the Fay Street Historic District also represent an unusually well-preserved pair of Queen Anne style three deckers typical of the Grafton Hill area, and among the best surviving examples from the late 19th century in the neighborhood. The Fay Street Historic District thus meets criteria A and C of the National Registe of Historic Places on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other areas within the community.
The two three-deckers of the Fay Street Historic District are remarkably well- preserved examples of the Queen Anne form of three-decker design popular locally in the last decade of the 19th century. Both were built ca. 1896, and are quite similar in plan and form. Both have hip roofs and side-hall plans. The asymmetrical main facades each have end-bay entries sheltered by single- story, projecting porches, flanked by a three-story, projecting bay window. The porches are supported by turned posts, and have heavy, solid decorative brackets and open balustrades. The houses are clad in wood clapboard, with shingle bands between stories on the front and side bays. Both retain 2/2 sash windows with simple surrounds. On 4 Fay Street, the roof cornice overhang shelters regularly-spaced, decorative brackets, with large corner brackets with pendants on the side bay window roof projection.
On 6 Fay Street the cornice overhang shelters large, paired brackets in the corners. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain historical importance of area and how the area relates to the development of other areas of the community. The Fay Street area was built up in the last decade of the 19th century as part of the northward extension of three-decker development north of Grafton Street to the Wall Street area. Here, blue-collar residents found work at the nearby Graton and Knight Company, makers of leather drive belts, in the railyards, warehouses and meat packing plants concentrated along the Franklin Street and Shrewsbury Street axes. The Wall Street area- was initially one of mixed Irish and French-Canadian immigrant families. By the early 20th century it was also the focus of the city's Syrian and Lebanese communities.
The two three-deckers of the Fay Street Historic District, 4 and 6 Fay Street, were probably built by James A. McDermott, a general contractor, who owned the two houses, along with half a dozen other local properties, through 1910. By 1920, both houses were owned by Andrew Skibauski, a foreman at a pork packing plant, who lived at 4 Fay Street. A decade later, the two houses were owned by Isa Kal'il and Joseph Makoul, pedlars, who lived at 4 Fay Street. The earliest known residents (1896) of 4 Fay Street included A.D. Bosworth, a cabinetmaker; George Doolittle, a brakeman; Charles Dodge, an engineer; John Ryan, a tallyman; and James Quirk, a laborer. Occupants in 1910 included John Dolan, a policeman; Louis Farber, a leatherworker; and Jacob Danielson, a pressman. Tenants in 1920 included Anthony Kislakus; and William Russell, a foreman at Boston Pressed Metal.
