It is significant as a representative example of the efforts to extend three-decker development westward into Worcester's fashionable residential area in the early 20th century. It is also an unusually well-preserved and well-detailed example of the use of Colonial Revival details in local three-decker construction during this period.
The Drew Three-Decker thus meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Architecturally, 42 Abbott Street is a remarkably well-preserved and well- detailed example of the locally popular Colonial Revival three-decker. The building has the characteristic side-hall plan with a side-hall jog, and is clad in wood clapboard, with wood shingle bands between stories. The house has an unusual cross-gable roof. The asymmetrical main facade has an entry bay with a projecting three-tier porch, supported by slender Tuscan columns, and capped by a pedimented portico. The porch is flanked by a projecting, three story bay window, unusual for the use of a single light of floral pattern stained glass as the front window.
A second bay window projects at the side-wall jog, with stained glass in the upper lights of the central windows. Regularly spaced, paired brackets decorate the roof cornice overhang. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. By the first decade of the 20th century, a sector of scattered three-decker development extended out along the Pleasant and Chandler Street streetcar corridors, across Park Avenue to Abbott Street, where a new neighborhood school was located in 1894 (36 Abbott Street, NR). Abbott Street subsequently remained the westward edge of three-decker extension into the city's West Side, but its location near this high status residential zone meant that the street attracted a group of distinctly white collar residents.
The first known owner of 42 Abbott was Elizabeth Drew, apparently not a city resident. Tenants in 1904 included Albert Lothrop, o 1 0 c C a salesman; Jennie Sutcliffe, a a cashier; Josephine Smith, a stenographer; Joseph O'Herran, a bookeeper; Benjamin Clark, a manager; and George Montague, a salesman. By 1910, the house was owned by Emma Lothrop. In that year the residents included three salesmen: Albert Lothrop, Charles Whitcomb, and George Montague. In the 1920s, the building was owned and occupied by Mrs. Bridget Hoey. Residents in 1920 included Richard Hoey, an accountant; and George Teeling, a manager. Members of the Hoey family resident here in 1930 included Bridget; Agnes; Anna; George, an attendant; Mary, a nurse; Robert, a clerk; and Richard, a controller.
