It is significant as a representative example of the early 20th century extension of middle-class, multi-family streetcar suburbs northward into the neighborhoods along the Lincoln Street corridor.
It is also a well-preserved and wel1- detailed example of the early gambrel-roofed variation of local Colonial Revival three-decker The Gullberg Three-Decker thus meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms ot other buildings within the community. Architecturally, 18 Ashton Street is a well-preserved example of early gambrel-roofed, Colonial Revival three-decker construction in the city. side-hall plan, and is clad in wood clapboard, with wood cut-shingle on the bay windows on the main facade. Modern siding has been placed over the shingle sheathing on the gambrel she math facade. The house has the characteristic faces. The first and second stories exhibit typical local Colonial Revival details.
An asymmetrical main facade features a recessed entry porch flanked by a bay window with upper light stained glass in the front window. A second bay window projects from the side wall. The building's third story is defined by its gambrel roof. In the main facade, the third floor porch is contained in a semi-circular gable opening, and is flanked by a pair of double sash windows with diamond-paned upper lights. A small, elliptical light is located near the gambrel apex. Cross-gambrel dormers, and a smaller shed dormer mark the side elevations. Windows throughout contain 1/1 and 2/1 sash with simpie surrounds. 1902 as part of the northern extension of subáivisions along the Lincoin Street corridor on the west slope of Green Hill. The area developed as a middle-class, multi-family streetcar suburb north of downtown. The first owner of the house was Evert Gullberg, a carpenter, who resided here. Tenants in 1902 included William Meyn, a and M.V. Loudin, a grocer. Gullberg owned the house over the next decade, but by 1916, the owner/occupant was C. Russell Forbes, a printer who worked downtown. By 1924, the building was owned by Aaron Reed and Max Cohen, who possessed five other rental properties in the city. In 1928 it was owned by Frank and Anna Bergstrand, also as rental property. Most residents of 18 Ashton through the first three decades of the 20th century were employed in white collar, supervisory, or semi-skilled jobs.
In 1908, tenants included Robert Darrell, a foreman; and Üphra Keller, a music teacher. In 1916 they included Arthur NcGee, a fireman; and Chester Lord, an engineer for the Boston and Maine Railroad.
