It is significant as a representative example of early multi-family, rental housing development on the lower slopes of Belmont Street at the edge of Worcester's downtown. It is also significant for its association with the neighborhood's ethnic immigrant communities, particularly the Armenians of the early 20th century.
It is also an unusu:lly well-preserved and ornately detailed example of early Queen Anne style double three-decker construction. The Mary Dean Three-Decker thus meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic ARCHffECTURAL SiGNIFfZANCE® Bescribe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Architecturally, 130 Belmont Street is a remarkably well-preserved and well- detailed example of the use of Queen Anne style elements in a double three- he symmetrical facade features a central entry and projecting end window bays. The entry is decorated with a large, semi-circular transom light set in panel and sheltered by a shallow, bracketed portico. Above the entry, on the second and third stories, are paired windows of 1/l sash, on the third story by semi-circular arch molding, and separated decorative panels.
Horizontal panels are also located above the third story windows. The building is clad in wood clapboard. The roof cornice overhang is decorated by regularly spaced, paired and single brackets. Windows are of 2/1 sash, with simple surrounds and caps. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Built ca. 1892, the Dean Three-Decker dates to the early phase of three- decker construction on the lower slopes of Belmont Street in Worcester's ethnically diverse East Side. A double three-decker built as a rental oroperty, the house presents a stylish facade to a main thoroughfare. The uilding's 19th century residents included Irish, German and Swedish families, although many early 20th century tenants were Armenian or Syrian/Lebanese.
Many were employed as wireworkers in the nearby North Works of Washburn and The building's owner through 1900 was Mary Dean, who also owned adjacent houses at 2, 4 and 6 Elizabeth Street; Patrick Dean, a foreman, is listed as a resident through this period. Residents in 1892 included M. - Meyerhardt, an apothecary; C. Bartlett, a motorman; and G.W. Cashin and E.G. Thoren, both gunsmiths. In 1900 residents included Apet and Vartan Moonjian, both taylors; S. Moonjian, a grocer; F. Walsh, a blacksmith; Otto Karle, a sausage maker; and M.J. McMahon, Alfred Dick, and Gustaf Nordahl, all wire- workers. Charlie Lee ran a Chinese laundry in the basement. By 1910, the building was owned by George Cohn; in 1920 it was owned by Israel Greengus, a machinist who owned two dozen rental properties throughout the city.
Tenant in 1910 included Samuel Ziskira, a fruit merchant; Michael Kollijian, a shoe- maker; Moses Toomasian and Steven Avedian, wireworkers; and Alexander Kazanjian, a laborer. By 1930, the house was owned by Maria Defeudis, who lived here with her husband, Dominick, a painter.
