Recorded by Michael Steinitz Organization for MHC Date December 1988 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Elizabeth McCafferty Three-Decker possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. It is significant as a representative example of the multi-family housing built in the Cambridge Street area, one of the major industrial areas at the periphery of downtown Worcester in the late 19th century.
It is also a remarkably well-preserved, well-detailed example of local Queen Anne style three-decker construction. The McCafferty Three-Decker thus meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local lerel. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Architecturally, 45 Canterbury Street is a well-detailed, modest local example of Queen Anne style three-decker design, one of the best preserved survivals in the Cambridge Street area. The house has the characteristic side-hall plan with side-wall jog. The asymmetrical main facade has an entry bay with panelled, double doors, sheltered by a three-tier porch with lathe- turned posts. The porch is flanked by a three-story, projecting bay window.
The house is clad in wood clapboard, with shingle bands between stories in the bay window. The hip roof has a wide cornice overhang that shelters both single and paired decorative brackets. Window sash is 2/1 and 1/1, with simple surrounds. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The Cambridge Street neighborhood in which the McCafferty Three-Decker was built ca. 1894 was defined by three rail lines that radiated from downtown Worcester; along these transportation corridors major local industrial expansion took place in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Employment opportunities attracted both skilled and unskilled workers, many of Irish extraction, and a residential district developed in the low-lying area between the rail lines and factories.
Elizabeth McCafferty, who resided here into the second decade of the 20th century. Joseph T. McCafferty, a laborer, was also a resident during this period. Tenants in 1894 included Henry Crow, a machinist; and Thomas Smith, an armorer. Tenants in 1900 included Henry Crow; John Croake, a coremaker; and Thomas Croake, a laborer. By 1920, the house was cwned and occupied by Joseph Toomey (Twomey), a laborer, who lived here througn 1930. Tenants in 1910 included Edward Hayes, a teamster; Maurice Hayes, a policeman; and Robert Black, Jr., a machinist. Residents in 1920 included Edward and Maurice Hayes; and Patrick O'Leary, a machine operator. In 1930, tenants included Delia Ducharme, a widow; James Power, an engineer at the gas works; James Power, Jr., a student; and Margaret Power, a clerk.
