Recorded by Michael Steinitz Organization for MHC Date December 1988 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Louis Delsignore Three-Decker possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. It is significant for its association with the Italian-immigrant, working-class, multi-family residential community that extendied eastward along the Shrewsbury Street corridor in the early 20th century. It is also the only local example of a fully stucco-finished three-decker, unusual for its window bays and for the decorative moldings on its porch openings.
The Delsignore Three-Decker thus meets criteria A and Cof the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Architecturally, 12 Imperial Road is an unusual example of local masonry three-decker construction, the only Worcester example of a three-decker with its full exterior wall surface finished in stucco. The house has the typical side-hall plan. The asymmetrical main facade has an end entry bay that contains a three-tier porch. The porch openings on each story have unusual arches with hood molds, and on the first story, a central keystone. The porch is flanked by a shallow, curved, three-story bay window. A second, curved bay window projects from the side wall. Windows are single.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Built ca. 1916, the Delsignore Three-Decker was part of the northeast expansion of Worcester's Italian ethnic community along the Shrewsbury Street axis in the first decades of the 20th century. The first knowr owner of 12 Imperial Street was Louis Delsignore, a mason, who may have been responsible for the building's stucco exterior finish. In 1920, the house was owned by Joseph Demarco, a Shrewsbury Street real estate broker, who owned half a dozen other neighborhood properties at that time. By 1930 however, the house was again owned, and occupied by Louis Delsignore. Tenants of the house in 1916 included Joseph Nicoletti and Joseph D'Angelo, both laborers.
Residents in 1920 included Pasquale Lombardo, a molder; Guglielmo Cristiani, a bricklayer; and Battista Simoncini, a laborer. Besides Delsignore, residents in 1930 included Roxie Charamella, a fruit dealer; and Pasquale Soloperto, a barber.
