It is significant as a representative example of the three-deckers built during the westward expansion of Worcester's Piedmont neighborhood in the late 19th century, as it developed as an ethnic, working-class, multi-family residential district. It is also an unusually finely-detailed example of the local use of Queen Anne styie elements in three-decker construction. The Lumb Three-Decker thus meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level.
ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Architecturally, 80 Dewey Street is a remarkably well-preserved and well- The building is sheathed in wood clapboard, with shingle bands between stories. It has a typical side-hall plan. The shallow, hip roof has a wide cornice overhang, which shelters unusually ornate single and paired brackets, and vine-pattern corner brackets. Built ca. 1894, the Lumb Three-Decker was located at the western edge of the working-class residential district that developed in the late 19th century to the west of downtown Worcester.
Within this area of mixed cottages, multi-family houses, and light industry, Dewey Street was an area of concentrated three-decker development. The first known owner of 80 Dewey was Thomas Lumb, a saloon keeper; in 1910 the building was still owned by Fred Lumb, also a saloon keeper. Tenants in 1896 included William Keyes, a clerk; Michael Goldberg, a salesman; and Frederick Moore, a shoemaker. By 1920, the owner of 80 Dewey Street was Albert Turnstall, who resided in the suburban town of Auburn. Residents at this time included Harold McIntosh, a machinist; Ephraim Reed, a painter; and Herbert Shales, a razor maker.
