Smith Three-Decker possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. It is significant as a representative example of early 20th century three-decker construction in the University Park area, during a period when employees, many of et nic immigrant extraction , were increasingly drawn to opportunities in the area's factories.
It is also one of the best-preserved, well-detailed Queen Anne style three-deckers in the University Park area. The Smith Three-Decker thus meets criteria ca eane, seret ecbietare tie uco el A and C of the NationalRegister of Historic Places, on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Architecturally, 22 Kilby Street is an unusually well-preserved example of Queen Anne style three-decker construction, and serves as a visual focal point for a corridor of three-deckers that extends northeast onbeacon Street. The building has a characteristic side-hall plan, with a side-wall jog. it is clad in wood clapboard, and has a hip roof with a small gable dormer in the main facade. recessed, three-tier porch, flanked by a projecting, three-story bay window.
Porch details include turned posts with small, decorative support brackets, spindle balustrades, and spindle friezes. Windows contain 1/1 and 2/1 sash, and have simple crowns. Regularly spaced brackets decorate the roof cornice overhang. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Erected ca. 1908, the Smith Three-Decker was one of the last Queen Anne style three-deckers built in the University Park neighborhood. The house is part of a concentration of three- deckers built in the Beacon-Hollis-Kilby Street area, primarily to house the families of workers in the expanding industies along the nearby Boston and Albany Railroad corridor. Ihe earliest known owner of 22 Kilby Street was Ellen M.
Smith, who owned four neighboring three-deckers, only one of which, 6 Hollis Street, is still extant. By 1920, 22 Kilby Street was owned by Louis furwitz and Morris Ullman, proprietors of the Puritan Bottle Company, and owners oi four other rental buildings in the Kilby Street area. By 1930, the house was owned by Max Greenburg, a realtor. Residents in 1908 included Roy Loud, a machinist; James Blaine, a moulder; Harry Ware, a fireman; and George Hathorne, a manager. In 1920, residents included James Default, a painter; Michael Garvey and Come Bousquet, both weavers; John Garvey, a beamer; and Edward Garvey, an auto mechanic. Tenants in 1930 included Patrick no ne Tineedore Vininan Hassett, John White, and Theodore Pinkham, all machinists; Cornelius 0'Connor, a helper; and Melcon Nashanian, a loom worker; as well as Michael Garvey and James Default.
