It is significant for its association with the Scandanavian, working-class, multi-family residential neighborhood that developed north of Belmont Street in the late 19th century.
It is also a remarkbaly well-preserved, well-detailed and unusually ornate example of the early forms of Queen Anne style three-decker popular in Worcester during this period. The Bostrom Three-Decker thus meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Architecturally, 152 Eastern Avenue is a remarkably intact, well-detailed example of the Queen Anne style three-deckers popular in Worcester in the 1890s. The house has the characteristic hip roof, side-hall plan, and side-wall jog. The asymmetrical main facade has an end bay entry with panelled double doors. The entry is sheltered by a projecting, single-story porch with an ornate balustrade, turned posts, and solid brackets.
The porch is flanked by a three-story bay window with flared skirts sheathed in shingle between stories. Elsewhere the house is clad in wood clapboard. Windows have 2/2 sash and ornate caps with bull's eyes. The roof cornice overhang shelters large, decorative corner brackets. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The Bostrom Three-Decker, built ca. 1894, was located in an early area of three-decker development on the hillslope north of Belmont Street, an area dominated during this period by families of Swedish, Finn-Swede, and Finnish extraction. Many residents of the woking-class neighborhood were employed at donta o then the nearby North Works of the Washburn and Moen Company (later American Steel and "Tire), or in other local firms that employed skilled metal workers.
The building at 152 Eastern Avenue was part of a row built ca. 1894. The owner through the 1920s was Eric Bostrom, a machinist who resided here. Tenants in 1894 included Carl Bostrom, a molder; and Gustaf Lundgren, a woodworker. In 1900, tenants included Carl Bostrom; Eric Johnson, a wire- worker; and J.M. and S.H. Svenson, wallpaper hangers. Tenants in 1908 included Carl Bostrom and J.M. Svenson. In 1920 they included Carl Bostrom; John Lundgren, a patternmaker; and Victor Lundgren, a musician.
