It is significant for its association with the working-class, Scandanavian, multi-family residential district that developed along Belmont Street in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is also an unusually well-preserved, and particularly ornate example of Queen Anne three-decker design. The Blodgett Three-Decker.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Architecturally, 167 Eastern Avenue, is a remarkably well-preserved, well- detailed Queen Anne style three-decker, unusual for its cross-gable form. The house has the characteristic side-hall plan. The asymmetrical main facade has a three-tier porch supported by slender Tuscan columns, flanked by a three-story bay window. The third tier of the porch is sheltered by a gable that sweeps lower than the cornice over the bay window, which gives the main facade a particularly rakish appearance. A second, three-story bay window is located on the side wall, and this is capped by a small projecting gable.
The bay corners in the cornice are docorated with heavy corner bracket with pendants. The house is clad in wood clapboard, with shingles on the bay windows. Windows have 2/1 sash with simple surrounds. A small semi-circular light is located in the front gable apex. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Built ca. 1902, the Blodgett Three-Decker is located on the northern edge of a concentration of late 19th and early 20th century three-decker construction in the Belmont Street area. This neighborhood developed as a multi-tamily, working class area dominated by families of Swedish, Finn-Swede, and Finnish extraction. Many residents were employed as skilled metal workers by local manufacturing firms.
The first known owners of 167 Eastern Avenue were the heirs of Lydia Blodgett, who also owned 169 Eastern Avenue and 6 Blodgett Place. Residents in 1902 included Alex Rafuse, a coachman; Oscar Wandland, a painter; and Axel Kasperson, a machinist. By 1910 the house was owned by Carl Sundburg. Tenants included August Westbom, a dry goods merchant; Patrick McArdle, a machinst at the Ames Plow Company; and John Fallstrom, an armorer for the Harrington Richards Arms Company. In 1920, Carl Bostrom, a molder, owned and occupied the house. Residents included the family of Mrs. Anna Fors; and Gustaf Hultgren, a cutter in a print shop.
