It is significant as a representative example of the late westward edge of three-decker development in Worcester's fashionable, white-collar West Side. It is also an unusually well-preserved and well-detailed example of Colonial_ Revival three-decker design. The Hirst Three-Decker thus meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Architecturally, 90 Lovell Street is the best-preserved and best-detailed example in a row of three-deckers built on Lovell Street in the second decade of the 20th century. The house is a fine example of locally popular, modest Colonial Revival three-decker design.
The house has a typical side-hall plan, with a gable roof, and is clad in wood clapboard, with wood shingle bands between nds between Stoeses ang bay with a projecting three-tier porch, capped by a pedimented gable portico that projects from the pediment of the main facade gable. Porch details include paired square support posts and rail balustrades. The Hirst Three-Decker is the best-preserved example of a number of three- deckers built in the Columbus Park neighborhood in the early decades of the 20th century. The area was one of the rare extensions of multi-family, three-deckers into the city's generally single-family, high-status West Side. In general, the Lovell Street area three-deckers attracted a group of white-collar, middle class residents. In 1920, 90 Lovell Street was owned and occupied by Samuel Hirst, a timekeeper. Derrick Paine, a painter, also resided here in that year. By 1930, the house was owned by Herbert Richardson, a surgical knitter, who also lived here. Other residents included Frederick Germain, operator of a downtown elevator company; John Shaughnessy, a clerk; Edward Shaughnessy, a salesman; and Walter Shaughnessy, a laborer.
