Recorded by Michael Steinitz Organization for MHC Date December 1988 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Helen Dodge Three-Decker possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. It is significant as an unusual example of fashionable, middle-class three-decker housing built at a parkside location on the city's high status West Side.
It is also a notably well-preserved and well-detailed example of eclectic, early 20th century local three-decker design. The Dodge Three-Decker thus meets critera A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in tertas of other buildings within the community. Architecturally, 570 Pleasant Street is the best preserved example of a group of ornate three-deckers built opposite Elm Park in the early 20th century. Eclectic in design, the house is unusually complex in its massing. The main an end bay entry with a three tier porch with semi-circular, arched openings on the first and second stories, and solid brackets in the rectangular third tier opening. The porch is flanked by a three-story projecting square window bay.
Mor unusual is a second, large, square three- story bay window that projects at an angle from the corner opposite the entry. A third, angled bay window projects from the side wall. A small front gable dormer and a side shed dormer add to the complexity of the building's form. The house is clad in wood clapboard, with shingle bands between the stories. an a clad an aodo cLapboc ea Many of the bay windows have geometric pattern lights. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Built ca. 1912, the Dodge Three-Decker was part of the most westward extension of three-decker development into Worcester's fashionable, high-status West Side residential district.
Part of a group of stylish three-deckers built along the Pleasant Street electric streetcar corridor in the early 20th century, the house attracted a distinctly middle-class, white-collar group The first known owner of the house was Helen Dodge, and Mr. Dodge resided here in 1912. Tenants in that year included Mrs. Lucy Harrington and Eva Harrington. By 1920 the house was owned by Frank Butler, a (real estate?) agent, who also owned 566 Pleasant Street and three other city buildings. Mrs. Frances Butler resided at 570 Pleasant in 1920. Other tenants in that year included Harry Thompson and Edward Warner, both clerks. aiso owned a house nearby at 18 Abbott Street, as well as two parcels of land in the city.
Tenants in 1930 included Harry Thompson, now employed as a manager; James McElhinney, a clerk; Nellie Mahoney, a phone operator; Minnie Wrenn, a cierk; and Shirley Warner, a compositor.
