It is significant as a rare, surviving representative residence in the Green Street neighborhood, one of the original core areas of Worcester's East Side Irish community.
It is also the best preserved three-decker in this area, a very early Queen Anne style example notable for its fine details. The McPartland Three-Decker thus meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. 8 Architecturally, 17 Pond Street is an .unusual survival, and a remarkably well- detailed house, representative of the earliest forms of Queen Anne style three-decker built on Worcester's East Side. The house has the characteristic side-hall plan with side-wall jog, and a hip roof with unusually ornate, decorative brackets and paired corner brackets in the cornice overhang. The house is clad in wood clapboard and shingle. The asymmetrical main facade has an entry bay with a double-leaf panelled door.
A three-tier porch supported by square posts appears to be an early 20th century replacement. The porch is flanked by a projecting, three-story bay window. Windows have 1/1 and 2/2 sash, with bracketed caps. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the comunity. The McPartland Three-Decker was built ca. 1888 in the established Irish, working-class neighborhood that was located along the Green Street corridor, at the edge of downtown Worcester. Well developed as a multi-family residentia area by the mid-19th century, the Green Street area was also an early focus of The earliest known owner of 17 Pond Street was James McPartland, a (leather?) cutter, who in 1890 lived at 21 Pond Street. From 1900 to 1920, McPartland did reside at 17 Pond Street.
During this period Catharine McPartland was listed as theowner of both 17 and 21 Pond Street. In the 1920s, the owner was listed as Mrs. Catharine Halpine, who also resided here. Residents of the house in 1888 included Robert Lauder, a hackman; Michael Kelly, a laborer; and Patrick Kelly and R.H. Baker, both machinists. Tenants in 1912 included Andrew Coskie, a boot and shoe. maker; John Armstrong, a fireman; and Thomas Armstrong and Austin Grady, both laborers.
