Three-Decker possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materiali, workmanship, feeling and association. It is significant for its association with the Jewish, middle-class, multi-family residential district that developed along Providence Street in the Vernon Hill highlands in the 1920s, and particularly for its association with the Dworman family, which appears to have developed much of the area.
22 0 eo 200 3002500 It is also a well-preserved example of a particularly fine execution of a Craftsman style three-decker. The Dworman Three-Decker thus meets criteria A and C of the National Register ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Architecturally, 159 Providence Street is a remarkably well-detailed and well-detailed example of the use Craftsman style elements in the last era of local three-decker design. The house has the characteristic side-hall plan. The hip roof has a central projecting front dormer with a triple window. The asymmetrical facade has a recessed porch supported by squat square posts, abbreviated central balustrade rails. The porch is flanked on each story by a four window ribbon.
On the side wall, a shallow, three-story, projecting square bay has triple windows on each story, and is capped by a pedimented gable with a diamond stained-glass light. Windows have 6/1 sash with simple surrounds. The house is clad in wide wood clapboard on the first story and wood shingle on the second and third stories. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. By the third decade of the 20th century, three-decker suburb development was extending further south along Providence Street to the lots that faced the Vernon Hill Playground, as Jewish middle-class families relocated from the lower Providence Street neighborhood on the northern slope of Grafton Hill. The house at 159 Providence Street was built ca. 1926 by the Dworman family, carpenters, contractors and realtors.
The Dworman's had their business location at 27A Providence Street; they appear to have been responsible for much of the three-decker development in the 1920s in the Woodford Street area east of Vernon Hill Playground; 159 Providence Street was built as a Dworman family residence. It was owned by David Dworman. Other residents in 1926 included Nathaniel Dworman, of the Building Company; Harry Oworman, a carpenter; and Francis Dworman, an insurance agent. Other tenants in 1926 included Wolf Beskin, a woolens merchant; and Harry Schwartz, a salesman. Residents in 1930, besides the Dwormans, included Sidney Haitt, a salesman; Morris Doicourt, a pedlar; Anne Dolcourt, a secretary; and Benjamin Dolcourt, a fruit merchant.
