It is significant as a representative example of multi-family residential development in the Main South area in the second decade of the 20th century, a period of continued local economic growth and population expansion. It is also an unusually well-preserved and well-detailed building, typical of the more modest forms of local Colonial Revival three-decker construction during this period. The Ridyard Three-Decker thus meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the conmunity. 4 Architecturally, 5 Mount Pleasant Street is an unusually well-preserved example, representative of the local use of Colonial Revival style elements in early 20th century three-decker construction.
The house has a shallow, hip roof, and is clad in wood clapboard, with wood shingle bands between stories. The house has the characteristic side-hall plan with a jog in one side elevation. The asymmetrical main facade contains an entry bay with a recessed, three-tier porch, flanked by a three-story bay window. Colonial Revival details include the simple Tuscan porch columns, and the regularly spaced modillion blocks set beneath the roof cornice overhang. Windows have 1/1 and 2/2 sash set in simple surrounds. Geometric stained glass is located in the upper lights of the front bay windows. 1914, the Ridyard Ihree-Decker represents a late phase of multi-family, infill development in the residential neighborhood immediately south of downtown worcester, an area dominated through the early decades of the 20th century by families of Irish descent. The first owner of the house was Albert Ridyard, a plumber, who resided at 9 Florence Street, and who owned more than 20 rental properties in the city. By 1920, the building was owned by Harry Marrin, a pedlar, who owned three other houses on the ned by aarry Mapren, a pedan e, street. In 1924 the owner was Annie Wilson, who' owned three other Worcester properties; in 1928 the owner was David Cohen, a Millbury Street grocer, who owneda half dozen other buildings in the city. None of these owners resided at 5 Mount Pleasant.
Tenants in 1914 included Walter Stone, a machinist; and John Rice, Frank Dunton, and August Sanger, whose occupations are unknown. From 1916 to 1924, Walter Haskin, owner of the Niksah Snowguard Company, resided here. In 1928, occupants included William J. Morrison, who operated a used car: business.
