It is significant for its association with the development of an ethnic, working-class, residential neighborhood in the Belmont Street area in the late 19tn century. The house is also an unusually well-preserved and well-detailed example of the modest forms of Queen Anne style three-decker built locally in this period.
The Munroe Three-Decker thus meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural fe.tures and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Architecturally, 11 Rodney Street is a well-preserved example, representative of the locally popular, early forms of Queen Anne style three-decker design. The house has the characteristic side-hall plan with side-wall jog. The hip roof has a wide cornice overhang, with paired and single decorative brackets. The asymmetrical facade has an entry bay with a double-leaf, panelled door, with ornate trim around the door lights. The entry is sheltered by a single-story portico supported by lathe-turned posts with decorative brackets. The porch is flanked by a projecting, three-story bay window.
Between the first and second stories, a flared overhang skirt, clad in cut shingle, wraps around the bay and extends back to the side-wall Paired decorative brackets mark the angles in the bay window under the overhang. Between the second and third stories, a narrower, less flared, cut shingle band wraps only around the bay window. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The Munroe Three-Decker was built ca. 1892 at the eastern end of the late 19th century subdivisions in the Belmont Street area. The neighborhood developed as a focus of working-class Swedish, Swede-Finn, and Finnish families during this period. Many residents were skilled metal workers employed by the nearby Washburn and Moen Wire Company, or by ocher local manufacturing firms.
The first known owner of 11 Rodney Street was Mrs. Sarah V. Monroe, who lived here. Tenants in 1892 included William Farnsworth, a wire tester; NIIs and Gustai Holmes, wireworkers; and Axel Hammar, a machinist. By 1900, the house was owned and occupied by Peter Anderson, a wire worker. Other residents included John Anders, a laborer; John Anderson Jr., a wireworker; Gustaf Sundin, a machinist; and John Erickson, a helper. By 1910, the house was owned and occupied by Victor Richard, a baggageman, who lived here through the 1920s. By 1930 the house was owned by Dorius Roberts, a police- man, and Armosa Roberts, both of whom resided here. Tenants that year includec Michael O'Connor, a laborer; and John Liddy, a wireworker.
