The building is significant as a representative example of the multi-family housing built in the ethnic, working class Isiand neighborhood, an area that developed as industrial growth occurred along the nearby railroad corridors. well-preserved example of only a handful of brick three-deckers built in Worcester. The Mark Three-Decker thus meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level.
ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Architecturally, 24 Sigel Street is a rare, well-preserved example of local brick three-decker construction. The unusual construction may have its explanation in the first owner's occupation as a mason. The building has the characteristic side-hall plan and hip roof. The asymmetrical main facade contains a double-leaf entry door, sheltered by a hood with heavy, decorated bracket supports. The entry is flanked by a single-story, projecting bay window, with recessed brick panels. the front and side elevations to demarcate the stories. Windows are 2/2 sash set in shallow, recessed, arched surrounds. The entry doors have geometric pattern, stained glass lights.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The Mark Three-Decker was built ca.1888 in the Island neighborhood, originally an Irish working class residential area, and by the early 20th century, an important focus of Worcester's Polish and Lithuanian communities. From the mid-19th century on, this low-lying area at the southern periphery of the central city attracted ethnic immigrant families who found employment in nearby factories. The first owner of 24 Sigel was John Mark, a mason, who also resided here. Tenants in 1890 included Patrick Kirwin, a machinist; and Paul Eno, a brickmaker. The Mark family resided here through 1900, when the building's other residents included James Layden, an engineer; and James Tuder, a laborer.
By 1910, the house was owned by John Bajda (Pajda), a springmaker. Also living here in 1910 were John Cronin, a woolsorter; and Richard Delany, a laborer. The Bajda family lived here through 1920. By 1930, the house was owned and occupied by Joseph Lakauskas (Leikoski), a springmaker. Tenants included Frank Smith, and Walenty Pika, a laborer.
