It is significant association with the early 20th century, multi-family residential development of streetcar suburbs along Lincoln Street north of downtown Worcester. It is also an unusually well-preserved and well-detailed example of Colonial Revival three-decker design popular locally during this period. The McPartalnd Three-Decker thus meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level.
ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Architecturally, 61 Paine Street is a remarkably well-preserved, well-detailed example, representative of the popular forms of modest, Colonial Revival style three-deckers popular early in the 20th century. The house has a hip roof, and is clad in wood clapboard. It has the characteristic side-hall asymmetrical main facade has an entry bay flanked by a three-story bay window. The house is most notable for its fine porching. The full-length, first floor porch rises to three tiers in the entry bay. It is supported by tall, Tuscan columns, and features an unusual post-and-slat balustrade. Windows have 2/1 sash. Regularly spaced brackets are located in the roof cornice overnang.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The northern part of the Lincoln Street area was developed in the first decades of the 20th century as a modestly fashionable middle-class and working-class streetcar suburb from which residents commuted to work downtown and other parts of the city. The house at 61 Paine Street was built ca. 1912, and its first owner was Frank McPartland, a postal carrier, who lived here through the 1920s. Tenants in 1912 included George McPartland, a wireworker; Frederick Maple, a postal carrier; Victor Jacques, a teamster; Anthony Jacques and Arno Varney, firemen; and Blanche Jacques, a millner. In 1930, the house was owned by William Gilrain, who lived at 128 Paine Street.
Tenants in that year included George McPartland; Frederick Maple; Michael Dillon, a wireworker; Joseph Dillon, a foreman; and Mary Dillon, an inspector.
