It is significant as a representative residence from the early 20th century development of the Belmont Street area as a neighborhood of working-class, Scandanavian families. It is also an unusually well-preserved, finely detailed example of the modest, Colonial Revival three-deckers popular locally during the period.
.The Erikson Three-Decker thus meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Architecturally, 19 Stanton Street is a remarkably well-preserved, well- detailed building, representative of the more modest forms of local Colonial Revival three-decker design. The house has the characteristic side-hall plan, and a gable roof with pediment in the main facade. It is clad in wood clapboard and shingle. The asymmetrical main facade has an entry bay with a three-tier porch, supported by paired square columns. The porch is flanked by a shallow, three-story bay window. A second bay window projects from the side wall. Windows have 2/1 sash with simple surrounds, and the stairwells have geometric pattern, stained-glass lights.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The Erikson Three-Decker was built ca. 1912, in the last period of three-decker construction in the Belmont Street area, a neighborhood dominated by Swedish, Swede-Finn and Finnish families in the early 20th century. Many residents found employment as skilled metal workers in local manufacturing firms. The first known owner of the house was Knut Erikson, a painter, who resided here through 1930. Tenants in 1912 included Carl Nordstrom, a carpenter; and Ivar Sjoberg, a blacksmith. Nordstrom still lived here in 1920, when other residents listed included Florence Erikson, a stenographer; and Algot Peterson, an elevator repairman. Tenants in 1930 included Waldmar Sandavist; and Gustaf Lundgren, a chauffer.
