It is significant for its association with the ethnic, working-class, residential district that developed along the western slope of Vernon Hill on the city's East Side in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
It is also an unusually well-preserved and well-detailed example of a double (six apartment) three-decker built with Colonial Revival style elements. The McGuinness Three-Decker tius meets Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the ocal level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Architecturally, 25 Suffield Street is a remarkably well-preserved and finely detailed example of the use of Colonial Revival details in a double three- decker. The house has a symmetrical main facade with a recessed central three- tier porch, flanked on either side by shallow, rounded three-story bay windows. The house is clad in wood clapboard, with wide wood shingle bands between stories on both the front and sides of the building. The front porch is.
supported by slender Tuscan columns, and features a pair of arched openings with keystones on the third tier. The first floor entry is flanked by 3/4 side lights. Unusual are the shallow, two-story bay windows that project from the second and third stories on the sides of the building. The very shallow hip roof has a wide cornice overhang, with regularly spaced, decorative brackets. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The McGuinness Three-Decker was constructed as part of the early 20th century development of the lower western slope of Vernon Hill as an ethnic, working- The area was initially an Irish (to a lesser extent) Swedish district, but by the 1920s, families of Polish and Lithuanian extraction were locating here. 1908, 25 Suffield Street was developed as an income producing, six-apartment double three-decker. The first owner was Patrick McGuinness, a plumber, who lived at 11 Orne Street. Tenants in 1908 included Michael McHugh, a trimmer; James McHugh, an electrician; Oliver Hebert and Axel Granlund, machinists; Albin Thomsson, a watchmaker; Carl Olson, a leatherworker; and Carl G. Johanson, a wireworker. By 1920, the building was owned by Krestna Backlin. Tenants included John Juksta, Daniel Maacik, and Tony Barkovskas, occupations unknown; Michael Mitchell, a laborer; Joseph Palomis, a sider; Jan Dagelis, a cook; and Michal Dagelis, a baker. By 1930, the Dagelis family owned the house, and jan (John) Dagelis, employed as a counterman, lived here.
Tenants in 1930 included Benjamin Zicius, a patenter; Adam Zicius, a laborer; Josep Palomis; Frank Tankes, a machinist; George Slarinskas, a cutter; Julius Grubliauskas, a wireworker; and Anthony Roman, an CUELOT, JUILUS CrUb zauskasa operator.
