It is significant as a representative example of the earliest phase of three-decker development in the Piedmont neighborhood, an ethnic, working-class area of multi-family housing that extended west of downtown in the late 19th century. It is also one of the best preserved, well-detailed Italianate style three-deckers in this area of the city.
The Simpson Three-Decker thus meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Architecturally, 69 Piedmont Street is a remarkably well-preserved, finely detailed example, representative of local Italianate three-decker construction in the late 1880s. The building is clad with wood clapboard, and has the typical hip roof. The house also has the characteristic side-hall plan, with a side-wall jog. The asymmetrical main facade features a full-length, floor porch, with chamfered posts and heavy, curved, decorative support brackets, a feature very common in the neighborhood. The roof cornice overhang shelters paired, decorative brackets, and a simple frieze of narrow, vertical bands. Windows are 2/2 sash, with simple crowns.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The Simpson Three-Decker was built ca. 1888 inthe mixed Irish and French- Canadian, working-class residential district that was then developing to the west of downtown Worcester. The earliest known owner (1890) of the building was Clara C. Simpson, whose residence in 1900 was listed as Framingham. By 1910, the building was owned by John T. Fennelly, a molder, who resided at this address through 1930. The earliest known residents (1888) included Herbert Howe, a clerk; Louis Lundin, a shoemaker; Nelson Lundin, an upholsterer; and Francis X. D. Latour, a clerk. Residents in 1920, besides Fennelly, included David Feehenny, a bookeeper; and Harry Spring, a shipper. Tenants in 1930 included John Moynagh; and Harry Holmes, a beltmaker.
