It is significant as a part of the eastward extension of an ethnic (mostly French-Canadian), working-class, residential neighborhood from the Wall Street area in the early decades of the 20th century. It is also an unusually wel1-preserved, well-detailed example of only a handful of brick three-deckers built in Worcester.
The Provost Three-Decker thus meet criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Architecturally, 30 Thorne Street is a remarkably well-preserved example of a Queen Anne style three-decker constructed of brick, a building material rarely used in local houses of this form. The house has the locally characteristic side-hall plan and hip roof. The asymmetrical main facade has an entry bay with a three-tier porch, flanked by a three-story bay window. Porch details include turned posts, spindle balusters, and small, scroll support brackets. Windows are 2/2 and 1/1 sash. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Built ca.
1910, the Provost Three-Decker was part of an eastward extension cf multi-family housing from the Wall Street area toward Plantation Street. The district was dominated by families of French-Canadian extraction, and the continued in-migration of families seeking employment resulted in its growth through the first decades of the 20th century. The first known owner of 30 Thorne Street was Arthur Provost, a bookeeper, who resided here through the 1920s. Tenants in 1910 included Arthur Bordeu, a casketmaker; Arthur Laforce, a foreman; and Joseph Laforce, a machinist. In 1930, the building was owned by Nathan Malnikoff, a salesman, who also resided here. Tenants included Albert Gelinas, a shoeworker; and Leon Desrosiers, a cable splicer.
