It is significant as an unusually ornate example of the eastward spread of suburban, ethnic, multi-family subdivisions into the Plantation Street area inthe second decade of the 20th century. It is also a remarkably well-preserved Colonial Revival style three-decker with an elaborate array of details.
The Levinson Three-Decker thus meets A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Architecturally, 38 Plantation Street is a remarkably well-preserved example and one of the most elaborately detailed Colonial Revival style three-deckers in the Plantation Street area. cut shingle bands between the stories. The house has a hip roof with an asymmetrically placed front gable pediment that contains a semi-circular light. Heavy modillion blocks decorate the roof cornice overhang. The asymmetrical main facade contains an entry bay flanked by a bay window.
The entry bay contains an unusually wide three-tier porch which extends partially across the adjacent window onthe second and third stories, and which on the first story extends across the facade to an attached pavillion. The porch is supported by Doric columns, which on the second and third tiers rise to shingle- :covered arches. Other porch details include balustrades and modillion blocks in the first floor portico cornice. The Levenson Three-Decker was built ca. 1920 as part of a major eastward extension of three-decker suburb development inthe second and third decades of the 20th century, a phase of local subdivision that created a modest, ethnically mixed, multi-family neighborhood.
The first known owner of 38 Plantation Street was Morris Levenson, a clothing merchant, who lived here. Tenants included Walter Brennan, a bookeeper; and Frank Malboeuf, a leather worker at Graton and Knight Leather Belt Company. By 1930, the house was owned by Felix Shimkus, a chef downtown, who also lived here. Other residents included Walter Shimkus, also a chef; Martha Stanina, a shipper; Jennie Stanina, a bookeeper; and John Lemanski, a pharmicist.
