It is significant for its association with the eastward expansion of ethnic, suburban, multi- family residential develoment into the Plantation Street area in the second and third decades of the 20th century. It is also a remarkably well- preserved, outstanding example of local Colonial Revival three-decker design.
The Stoliker Three-Decker thus meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms o other buildings within the community. Architecturally, 41 Plantation Street is an unusually well-preserved, elaborately detailed example of Colonial Revival three-decker construction. The house has the characteristic side-hall plan, but multiple side-wall jogs and square, projecting window bays give it an unusual complexity of plan. The house is clad in wood clapboard with wide shingle bands between stories. The roof has a fullfront gable pediment, and regularly spaced brackets in the cornice overhang. The asymmetrical main facade contains an entry bay flanked by a three-story bay window.
From the entry bay there projects a three-tier porch which on the first story wraps around the facade to the first projecting jog on the side wall. The porch is supported by single and paired, heavy square columns, which on the second and third tiers rise to arched openings. Decorative brackets mark the first floor portico cornice. Window sash is 2/1 and 1/1, with geometric pattern lights inthe front bay windows. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The Stoliker Three-Decker was built ca. 1916 as part of a major eastward extension of three-decker suburb development in the second and third decades of the 20th century, a phase of local subdivision that created a modest, ethnically mixed, multi-family neighborhood in the Plantation Street area.
The first known owner of 41 Plantation was Edna Stoliker, "who lived her in 1916. Other early residents included Darius Baer, a teamster; and William Logan, a hoseman. By 1930, the house was owned by Stanley Purvinskas, a beltmaker at Graton and Knight Leather Beit Company, who lived here.
