It is significant as a representative example of the first three-decker building boom in the Main South area in the 1880s and early 1890s. This period coincided with industrial expansion in the area, and with an influx of new employees and their families, most of ethnic inmigrant origins.
The Hunt Three-Decker is aiso a remarkabley well-preserved, ornate example of early Queen Anne style design. The Hunt Three-Decker thus meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local ievel. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Architecturally, 9 Wyman Street is an unusually well-preserved and well-detailed example oi Queen Anne style three-decker design. The building has the characteristic side-hall plan with a side-wall jog. The asynmetrical main facade contains an entry bay with a recessed, three-tier porch, flanked by a three-story bay window. The house is primarily clad in wood clapboard, but the bay window is sheathed in cut shingle, creating a highly textured surface on the main facade. The building's shallow hip roof projects over both the porch and bay.
The three-tier porch features turned posts, geometric pattern railings, and decorative, curved support brackets. Both heavy, single scroll brackets, and paired, curved brackets decorate the wide roof cornice overhang. Window sash is l/i and window surrounds feature caps with geometric pattern molding. Smaller, geometric pattern windows, some with stained glass, light the stairwells and the front parlor from the side wall. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Builc in 1890, the Hunt Three-Decker was one of many ornate three-deckers built in the Main South area to be owned and rented by the skilled employees of nearby manufacturing plants, and by the growing number of white-collar workers employed in downtown businesses.
By 1890, Main Street electric streetcar service had made the neighborhood particularly accessible as a residential location for many of the latter. The first owner of 9 Wymar was Daniel E. Hunt, a machinist, who resided at neighboring 1l Wyman Street (no longer extant). Tenants in 1890 included Thomas Thompson, a painter; George Southwick, a superintendent; and Edwin Mellish,a druggist. From 1892 to 1902 a resident was Solomon Heald, a machinist at the nearby Crompton and Knowles Loom Works. Residents in the first decade of the 20th century included Lena Herrick, a stitcher; Frank Hunt, a stenographer; Parker Chase, a mail clerk; and Merle Chase, a bookeeper. By 1920, the building was owned and occupied by John Healy, a streetrailway barnman. The Healy family resided here through 1930.
Tenants in the late 1920s included William Lynch, a plumber; Walter Lynch, a driver; and John Griffin, a helper.
