Date 6/1987: rev. 3/1988 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Thomas A. Crimmins House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials. workmanship, feeling and association. It is significant as one of the tinest Georgian Revivai style houses in the city whose massive size and brick construction belies its early date. It is also representative oi Newton's early 20th century suburban growth which resulted in infill of established areas as well as in development of new subdivisions. It meets criteria A & Coi the NRHP.
ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Thomas A. Crimmins House is an estate quality ezample of the Georgian Revival style. It consiste of a nearly square 2 and 1/2 story main block enclosed by a slate hip root, and a large 2 and 1/2 story rear wing. The house is trimmed with brick quoins and a modillion cornice. It has two major elevations--one facing Dartmouth Street and the other facing Commonwealth Avenue. The Commonwealth Avenue elevation has two bay projecting end pavilions ilanking a recessed center section with two monumental Tuscan columns. The Dartmouth Street elevation is somewhat simpler with a quatrastyle portico reaching out to the curving drive. Windows are simply framed and contain 6/6 sash.
As is the case with many quality houses constructed of brick, this one is laid up in Fiemish bond. A matching garage stands to the rear. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Wool merchant Thomas A. Grimmins owned a large lot on Dartmouth Street as early as 1907 but did not build until 1910-11. The Crimmins house was one of a number of large houses built on the south slope of west Newton Hill atter the construction of Commonwealth Avenue, but there are few building permits from this period and the architect of the house is unknown. Crimmins lived at 19 Dartmouth Street until 1940. In 1960 the estate was acquired by the Archbishop of Boston, Richard Cardinal Cushing, for occupancy by the Dominican Sisters.
In 1906 it was taken over by the Bishop of Melkite Catholics of the United States as the Bishop's residence.
