Date 3/1987: rev. 3/1988 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The City Stable and Garage possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. It is significant as an early city garage which followed the tradition and form of the 19th century city stables. It also reflects the continuing role of horses despite escalating automobile usage (see overview - section 8).
Finally, it is a handsome and weil-preserved bunlding displaying unusuai stepped rlemish gables. The city stable and Garage meets criteria A &. C oi the NRHP. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The City Stable of 1926 is a 1 and 1/2 story, rectangular plan, brick structure enclosed by a steeply pitched root with stepped Flemish gable ends and exposed raiters. It is built into a hillside so that on the south (rear) elevation, the basement story is fully exposed and contains four garage bays. On the north (tront) elevation a projecting frontispiece, also with stepped gable ends, contains the entry. Windows throughõut are segmentally arched and generally contain 6/6 sash.
Due to the presence of numerous non-contributing buildings on the parcel, the nomination is confined to the City Stable/Garage and the land extending 15' from the perimeter. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The Stables and Garage on Eiliot Street, headquarters of Division C of the Street Department which had charge of the highways and sewers on the south side of the city, were begun in 1926 and dedicated June 24, 1927. Trucks were stored at the basement level of the new building, while the main floor contained 26 large horse stails. However, the butllding was constructed so that when horses were no longer needed the main floor area could be converted to garage space.
According to the newspapers, other butldings built in conjunction with the Stables were "artistically" arranged on the "spacious, well laid out grounds" with consideration for their impact on the surrounding residential neighborhood. At the dedication, the city voiced great pride in the Street Department, its efficient and faithful employees, and the combination of "beauty and utility" in the new building, which was designed by Newton architect Herbert W. Colby. Colby was also responsible for the city-owned Bath House at Crystal Lake.
