Hayward House is a large 2 1/2 story stucco clad structure enclosed by a slate hip roof. Two facade gables, one of which extends out in lean-to fashion to encompass a glazed sunporch, frame the facade. The entry, which is nearly centered on the facade, is treated with 3/4 length sidelights and a gabled roof. Flanking it on either side are quadrupled windows with multi-pane sash. Asymmetrically placed single and paired windows light the second story. Colored tiles, laid in a diamond pattern and located in the gables and adjacent to the entry, enliven the otherwise stark facade. A matching two car garage with twin gables is located to the rear east beyond an angled wing (kitchen?). HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.
The house at 1547 Centre Street, Newton Highlands was designed by Winchester architect Robert Coit who practiced in the Boston area between 1892 and 1940. It was built in 1912 for Fred R. Hayward, son of Albert F. Hayward, a longtime Newton Highlands resident. In 1901, the senor Hayward was instrumental in the merger of several small confectionery firme, which then became the New England Confectionery Company at 254 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge. Fred Hayward became the factory manager of this company and in 1923 its president. Mr. Hayward was also a director of the Central Trust Co. of Cambridge and the Newton Trust Co. of Newton, as well as a participant in a variety of local clubs and organizations.
