Date 12/86; rev. 3/88 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) amont's Market possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, work manship, feeling and issociation. It is significant as an exceptionally well preserved early 20th century market, constructed if rusticated concrete block manufactured by a local company. As an example of a now rare building ype constructed of an innovative period material, it meets criterion C of the NRHP. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.
amont's Market is located on the SW corner of Charles and Auburn Streets in a modest residential neighborhood iouthwest of the Auburndale commercial district. It is a two story, flat-roofed rectangular plan structure whose ilightly angled facade reflects the configuration of its corner lot; the sloping protile of the lot leaves the basement Wmost fully exposed at the rear. The building is constructed of concrete block with cast stone trim, manufactured by is original occupant, the Riverside Concrete Co. The concrete block is rusticated at the basement level, and raised, mooth-faced quoins emphasize the corners. A moided stringcourse separated the stories and a frieze, decorated with i modified wave patters, is located beneath the moided cornice. The first story of the facade (N) is dominated by two arge display windows, both with diamond pane transoms, and the recessed entryway.
These elements are divided by hree butf brick piers which support the second story. The eastern display window is the larger. occupying its inure bay: the western window is half-size, sharing its bay with the entryway which contains one door to the narket space and one to the second story. The interior retains its original lights. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. 3uiit in 1910. Lamont's Market is pictured in a newspaper advertisement for the Riverside Concrete ompany, C. W. Salisbury owner, with work yards on Staniford Street, Auburndale. The construction n concrete stone was said to be "waterproof, fireproof and time proof.. warm in winter...cool in ummer" and at the time could be duplicated for about $3,7000.
Although originally built for -om mercial use oniy, a second-floor apartment was added in 1928. Early occupants included Fletcher ne Florist, Riverside Concrete, Auburn Press and, from 1913 to 1925, F. A. Willis, grocer. After the teath of Mr. Willis, Malcom Lamont took over, giving his name to the market.
