Date 3/1987; rev. 3/1988 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Carley Real Estate office possesses integrity of location, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. It is significant as a well-preserved, small-scale commercial block built on a tree-standing rather than connected plan. In the past fifty years, it has also had significant associations with real estate transactions in Newton.
It meets criterion C of the NRHP. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Carley Real Estate Oitice is a small rectangular plan building that is faced with buft brick and is enclosed by a tile hip root. A projecting center pavilion headed by a large clipped gable dominates the facade. The center entry is headed by a Tudor arch and retains its original glazed and paneled door. It is flanked by large single pane display windows. These in turn are hanked by round arched windows on the main body of the building. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The small commercial building at 1173 Washington Street was built in 1928 by the C. G.
Howes Company to house a dry cleaning and fur storage facility. It was designed by Boston architect, William Drummey, and had a decidedly residential look in keeping with the area which was still primarily residential at the time of construction. The building was taken over by Doris Carley, founder of the Carley Realty Company, in 1937. Miss Carley, who celebrated her fiftieth year in business in April 1987, was one of the first female brokers in the city, as wet - -3 :the multiple listing service in Newton.
