Bowditch. It is also representative of Newton's euburban expansion in the major growth decade of the 1920s which resulted in intill of establiehed areas as well as in development of new subdivisions.
Tne Bruner House thus meets criterla A &Coi the NRHP ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Bruner House is a well detailed rustic Crattsman house designed by a noted Boston architect. It 1s a 3 and 1/2 story shingled structure enclosed by a multi-level root. The symmetrical facade is dominated by twin facade gables which estend down to encompass a sunporch and garden gate to the torth and the entry to the south. The entry is protected by a hip rooted porch with the curving lines seen on the roois of many Crattaman houses. A large arched stairhall window ts located to the leit of the entry. The north iacade gable contains a picture window at the let story (c1960s), and paired windows at the 2nd story.
The south elevation is distinguisbed by banke of triple windowe with t/b eash at both stordes. The rustio qualitues of the house are greatly enhanced by ite wooded lotand the adjacent Commonwealth Country Club grounds. ME. 300 Mrs. Mayall Bruner, who were married in 1913, were the original ownere of the house constructed at 30 Magnolla Avenue in Newton Corner. Although little is know about the farnily. according to the Newton Directories of the perlod Mr. Bruner was a wool merchant with offices ar. 200 Sutmer Street in Boston The house, which was designed by architect Arthur H Bowditch, was bullt in 1933.
