Date 6/1987; rev. 3/1988 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Second C. A. Sawyer, Jr. House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. It is significant as an exceptionally well-detailed and preserved example of the Colonial Revival style, esecuted in brick. Derby and Robinson, noted for their Colonial Revival domestic designs, were the architects. It is also representative or Newton's early 20th century suburban growth which resulted in infill of established areas as well as in development oi new subdivisions. It meets criteria A & C of the NRHP.
ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Sawyer House is a finely detailed example of the Colonial Revival style constructed of brick lard up in Flemish bond and enclosed by a slate gable roof with pedimented dormers. A beltcourse separating the first and second stories adds to the rich effect. The symmetricai facade is centered on the entry with massive arched hood. Flanking multi-pane windows are headed by splayed brick lintels. A projecting wing and chimney are appended to the lett side. The large well landscaped lot complements this tine house. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role ownérs played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. C.
(Charles) Adrian Sawyer, Ir., of the Sawyer Construction Company, built three houses in Waban between 1910 and 1926, all designed by the well-known firt of Derby &e Robinson and built by the Sawyer Construction Company. The first house, at 16 Pilgrim Road, was featured in The House Beautiful magazine, September 1915. The family moved to Chicago for a short time, but returned by 1919 and built the house at 86 Waban Avenue.A third house, at 57 Dorset Road was built in 1920. A photograph oi house can be found in the Newton Mar Memorial The firm of Derby & Robinson, whose principal architect Richard Derby lived in Concord, specialized in domestic Colonial architecture. The Pierce House (1916,*NV-078), 237 Mill Street in Newtonville is another Derby & Robinson design. Derby was also responsible for many fine Colonial house in his native Concord.
The Sawyer Construction Company, in which C. Adrian Sawyer, Ir. was affiliated, is still in business. Sawyer was also involved with the Peabody Home for Crippled Children for many years.
