Lewis Harrison House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. It is significant as a well preserved example of the rustic Craitsman style, enhanced by an unusuai rurai setting.
It thus meets criterion C of the NRHP. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of sther buildings within the community. The Harrison House is an excellent example of a rustic cottage that is enhanced by a large wooded lot and proximity to the open space of the Commonwealth Country Club. It is a 1 and 3/4 story shingled structure enclosed by a gabled root with exposed raiter ends. ine root 1s pierced by a large shed dormer containing two paired windows; above tis element are trro eyebrow dormers. The rood extends forward to form a porch supported on heavy concrete columns. The asymmetrically place entry is framed by classical sidelights and eliptical fan. The window to the leit contains 6/6 sash. Rubblestone chimneys rise along both side elevations.
A one story gabled wing with secondary entry extends to the right and there is a detached, two car garage. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Mr. and Mrs. C. Lewis Harrison were the original owners of 14 Eliot Memorial Road, Which overlooks the Eliot Memorial commemorating John Eliot's preaching to the Indians who lived in the area in the 17th century. The site also overlooks the Commonwealth Country Club and the Boston skyline in the distance. The house, which was built about 1915, was designed by the firm of Brainerd and Leeds. Architect Edmund I. Leeds was a Newton resident and the firm was also responsible for the YM.C.A. (1911:N-026) and the F. A. Day Junior High School (1922: NV-079) C.
(Charles) Lewis Harrison was a lawyer with offices on Congress Street in Boston and a member of the Hunnewell Club of Newton. His first wife, Agnes Adele Harrison, had trained at Bellevue Training School for Nurses when the nursing proiession was in its infancy and generally not favored as a suitable occupation for young women. After completing her studies, she went on to organize training schools in Indianapolis, Indiana and in Norwich, Connecticut, where she met and married Mr. Harrison. During the first World War, Mrs. Harrison was an active supporter for the French Relief. She also was known for her beautiful gardens and her generosity in sharing her many rare plants with others. Mrs. Harrison died in 1922. Mr. Harris died in 1939.
