Ham mond House possesses integrity of location, design, setting. materials, work manship, feeling and association. It is significant as a simple, but weil-detailed and well preserved example of the Craftsman style. It thus meets criterion Cof the NRHP. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Hammond House is a simpie and unusual example of the Craftsman style designed its owner. It is a 1 and 3/4 story shingle clad house that faces a steep gable end to the street. A pergola porch extends across the facade protecting paired entries flanking a triple window.
Two tall chimney stacks rise along the west side elevation, and a shed roof dormer extends along the east roof slope. A similar pergola garden gate provides a pricturesque approach to the house. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Lumberman Edward Carlton Hammond designed and built 35 Groveland Street for himself and his wife Daisy in 1909. Although Hammond died in 1948, his wife remained there until her death in 1972, at which time it was soid to the present owners Linda Sherman and Raplh Johnson. The house, which features a generous stair hall, comfortable rooms clad with oak paneiling and trim, a fireplace faced with Gruby tiles, and original lighting fixtures, has been carefully restored and suitably furnished in the Craftsman manner by the present owners.
