Keesler House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials. workmanship, feeling and association. It is significant as a well-detalled and little altered early example of the rustic Craftsman style. It is also representative of Newton's suburban expansion in the major growth decade of the 1920s which resulted in infill of established areas as well as in development of new subdivisions. The Keesler House thus meets criteria A & Cof the NRHP. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.
The Keesler House is a fine example of the rustic Crartsman style. It is a 1 and 1/2 story shingle clad house enclosed by a gable rooi with exposed raiter ends. The front slope of the roof is pierce by a large complex dormer with varied rootlines. As is the case with other houses of this type, the root projects forward to form a verandah supported on heavy brick and meldstone piers. The entry is tramed by sidelights and flanked by a muiti-pane three part window to the left and by a bow window to the right. A brick and fieldstone chimney rises along the left elevation. The well planted site enhances the rustic qualities of the house. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The original owners of the house at 211 Highland Avenue were Mr. and Mrs. William F. Keesler.
Little is known about the Keesler family, but Newton Directories of the period indicate that Mr. Keesler was a salesman. The house was built in 1913 by local builder Frank E. Kneeland of Newton Centre, on the north side of West Newton mil, in an area already well developed with pre-1907 homes.
