SIGNIFICANCE Ihe Abraham Hil1 House retains integrity of location, materials, workmanship, and design in its surviving transitional First Period quirk-beaded frame under Criterion C. Its conversion to a central hall plan in the 18th century typifies the adaptation oI many central chimney buildings to conform to a new plan aesthetic.
More accurate dating of the house may yield important information under Criterion D on the use of principal rafter roofs without collar beams in Middlesex County. EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The Abraham Hill House is a 2 1/2 story 2 room deep clapboarded house with a slightly asymmetrical 3 bay facade, Beverly jog, and a carriage house converted to living space attached to the left rear. The house may have begun as a c. 1725 one or two cell central chimney structure which was altered to a central hall plan by removing the chimney and adding twin interior chimney stacks rising from the rear roof slope between the large front and smaller rear rooms. MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES All other framing members are boxed. Three walls have horizontal feather edged sheathing up to the dado level.
In the right hand chamber, all framing members except the summer tie are exposed and finished with a narrow quirked bead. The attic reveals evidence that the roof was raised to cover the rear rooms. The original roof was comprised of principal rafters, bridle jointed at the ridge and placed about 4 feet apart. When the roof was raised, some of the rafters were left in place and longer rafters placed next to them. LATER SIGNIFICANT FEATURES The house retains some simple Federal finishes, including the rear staircase, as well as much 18th century plaster. HISTORICAL INFORMATION The house is important for its association with Abraham Hill, a prominent early Menotomy local official who held such positions as constable, surveyor of highways, and fence viewer.
