SIGNIFICANCE The Zebulon Spaulding House retains integrity of location, design, materials, and workmanship in its surviving late First Period frame and roof, making it eligible under Criterion C.
second floor longitudinal summer beams are examples of an infrequently used framing technique deserving further study. EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The Zebulon Spaulding House is a very large, 2 1/2 story central chimney house 2 rooms deep with a five bay facade ornamented with a Greek Revival entry porch. Iwo full-height 18th or 19th century wings with unevenly-gabled roofs extend outward from the rear sides of the house. The right wing is further extended with a modern 2 story addition. A small 1 1/2 story addition projects from the center rear.
MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES The house exhibits transitional First Period workmanship in the exposed guirk-beaded framing members found on both floors, especially in the right-hand rooms, and in the remains of early roof construction in the The second floor longitudinal summer beams are an unusual The first floor right hand room has exposed and quirk-beaded and longitudinal summer beam. Ihe cornerposts, however, are covered with quirk-beaded boxes, and the fireplace wall exhibits raised-field paneling. The fireplace opening is large (47"x35"), but is surrounded by a Federal mantel. No First Period features are visible in the left front first floor room, nor in the rear first floor rooms. The joists in the rear right room have slightly beveled edges.
The second floor right hand front room has an exposed and quirk-beaded hard pine frame, including longitudinal summer beam similar to the room beneath it. Again, the flared posts are boxed. The left chamber has an longitudinal summer beam with very rough guirk beading; all other framing members are boxed. The attic reveals principal and common rafter construction with the top puklin forming the ridge pole. There are collar beams at each set of principal rafters. The lower portion of the front rafters and butt-cog purlins have been chopped away and been . replaced with unfinished tree limbs. LATER SIGNIFICANT FEATURES Most of the rooms contain some vertical board feather edged sheathing, and the fireplace walls in the first and second floor front right hand rooms are covered with field paneling.
