SIGNIFICANCE The Stephen Bacon House retains integrity of location, design, materials, and workmanship in its late First Period/transitional frame, making it eligible under criterion C. Its two room plan is probably typical of the fate of many transitional one cell houses which acquired additions during the 18th century. EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The Stephen Bacon House is a 2 1/2 story central chimney clapboarded structure with rear lean-to and an asymmetrical 5-bay facade.
(The house probably began as a one cell, 2 1/2 story structure with chimney to the right.) A modern 1 1/2 story wing projects from the right end; another smaller ell projects from the right rear. MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES The left side of the present structure retains late First Period/ transitional framing, details, and finish. The first floor left room has an exposed summer beam with quirk beading. The joists are 22" apart on centers, indicating a date after 1700, and are plainly finished. The five foot wide fireplace has a front side oven, a feature which indicates the transitional nature of the house. The second floor left hand chamber has an exposed summer beam with beveled chamfers and no stops, also a transitional characteristic. The rear left hand chamber has been enlarged with a shed dormer; an original lean-to end rafter is visible in the west wall.
The right hand rooms contain only boxed or unfinished framing members, suggesting that this section was added later in the 18th century. HISTORICAL INFORMATION The house has associations with important events in local history. The property appears on the 1724 "Needham Leg" map as one of the original six Early in the 18th century, the first public school classes Needheam were held in here.
