SIGNIFICANCE The Addington Gardner House retains integrity of location, material and workmanship in its surviving transitional First Period frame, making it eligible under Criterion C.
The second floor longitudinal summer beams represent an unusual Massachusetts framing option worthy of further study. EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The Addington Gardner House is a 2 1/2 story, 5-bay central chimney clapboarded structure now two rooms deep, although possibly one room deep originally. The main facade has a block modillion cornice and a Colonial Revival door surround surmounted by a projecting pediment. A c. 1800 1-story ell projects from the rear; a 1/2 story carriage shed is attached to this. There is a doorway with a hipped-roof porch on the right gable end. MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES The combination of late First Period quirk-beaded longitudinal summer beams on both floors and early Second Period finish in the front rooms seems to confirm the c. 1730 date. first floor front rooms have exposed, quirk-beaded longitudinal summer beams.
joist nails in the floorboards above the right-hand room indicate joists that are 19" on centers. The second floor right chamber has an exposed longitidinal summer beam; that in the left chamber has a quirked bead. The roof is a principal rafter with ridge pole system, with braces in the end bays and at the two chimney bay rafter sets. OTHER SIGNIFICANT FEATURES Early Second Period details in the first floor left room include small-scale bolection molding at the fireplace opening, and three raised-field panels with very, wide feather above the fireplace. The lobby has a simple transitional stairway with no balusters and square newel posts with turned knobs on top. The second floor right front chamber has a small fireplace opening with bolection molding and raised-field paneling above the fireplace.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION The house's long association with the Gardner family represents a significant example of the broad pattern of multi-generation family farms in New England history. Gardner, who came to Sherborn around 1730, a late date apparently confirmed by the transitional stylistic evidence. Gardners farmed the land until 1911, when the farm was sold to Ward J.
