SIGNIFICANCE The Walcott-Whitney House is a good example of a transitional First Period frame which retains integrity of design, location, materials, and workmanship under Criterion C. The house even retains considerable integrity of setting in its rural location at the end of a small lane. EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The Walcott-Whitney House is a 2 1/2 story, central chimney clapboarded structure with an asymmetrical 5 bay facade and a deep boxed overhanging cornice on the front facade.
There is an added 18th century lean-to to the rear, a 1 1/2 story 19th and early 20th century addition to the left rear, and a small single story addition wrapping around the right rear corner. The main facade has a Federal door surround with half-length sidelights and parallel pilasters supporting a high entablature and projecting lintel. MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES In the main first floor rooms, as is characteristic of "transitional" First Period houses, the Walcott-Whitney House exhibits late transitional First Period framing combined with contemporaneous early Second Period finish. The right hand room has exposed and guirk-beaded summer beam, front, rear, and end girts. The left room has exposed, quirk-beaded longitudinal summer beam, front, rear, chimney and end girts.
The front lobby retains its original transitional staircase, similar to one at the Brown-Stow House at 172 Harvard Road, (#115,) with simple rectangu- lar newels, and hand rails molded on the outside only. The only First Period features visible on the second floor are the quirk- beaded transverse summer beam, front plate, and chimney girt in the right hand chamber- The attic reveals a principal-rafter roof with purlins only in the chimney bay. OTHER SIGNIFICANT FEATURES Early Second Period finish appears in the first floor right-hand room, where there is feather-edged sheathing on the three walls, while the fourth, the fireplace wall, has a boxed chimney girt, dentilated cornice over the fireplace, and raised-field paneling. The fireplace opening is surrounded by bolection molding.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION The late date of the house seems to be confirmed by the fact that the earliest known owner, Deacon Jacob Whitney, came from Bolton in 1800 to carry on the farm of his wife's father, a Walcott. The Walcotts first came to Stow in 1735/36, and could have built the house at that time. Further deed research will be necessary to date the building more precisely.
