SIGNIFICANCE The Moses Brewer House retains integrity of design and workmanship, as well as feeling. The intact guirk-beaded frame of a late First Period or transitional house of ca. 1720-30, and - the original turned-baluster staircase, make it eligible under Criterion C. EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION I'he Brewer House is a clapboarded, two-story, central chimney and lobby entrance, 5-bay house with three-part fenestration on the facade, a modern stone chimney stack, and fireplaces topped by a pilastered brick chimney above the attic.
Windows are restored casements; one in each front and side wall of the four major front rooms. The house appears to have begun as a late First Period double cell house, to which a two-story leanto and Beverly jog were later added. In 1918 the house was dismantled and moved from Wayland; it was restored by Leonard and Ruth MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES The house has longitudinal summer beams in each front room at both stories; the summers are quirk-beaded, and the second-story corner posts have flat chamfers. Joists are 23" on centers in both sides of the house. The original center stairway is an important example of a transitional turned-baluster dog-leg stair which continues to the attic, and helps date the house to ca. 1720-30. LATER SIGNIFICANT FEATURES Because of the restoration in this century, it is unclear whether several features are original to the house.
The second floor left chamber has handsome field paneling, as do rooms in the leanto. These are perhaps more important for their role in the restoration of the house, which was described by Wallace Nutting in 1926 as "A Perfect 17th-Century Dwelling." HISTORICAL INFORMATION The Brewer House was relocated from its original site in Wavland in 1918. Because of its change in location, traditional histories have misdated the house. A recent land title search by Elizabeth Jo Lampl for the thematic survey suggests that it may originally have been built on land in Wayland owned by Moses Brewer, who sold it in 1760. The direct sequence of deeds from Brewer to Cutler, who sold the building to the Gouldings, is flawed.
