SIGNIFICANCE The Noyes-Parris House, or "Cedar Croft," (as it is referred in the will of Peter Noyes, the builder of the house), retains integrity of location, materials, design, workmanship and setting in its First Period frame which embodies distinctive characteristics of form and construction under Criterion C.
The single cell plan of the original house is representative of a large number of First Period buildings. summer beam on the second While the longitudinal floor is a relatively rare framing practice. The all-principal-rafter roof is a framing sysytem found in a number of late First Period buildings in Middlesex county (cf. the Hopestill-Bent Tavern in Wayland and the John Mason House in Lexington). In the case of the Noyes-Parris house, the roof may date from the period of the construction of the second cell after the First Period. EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The house is five bays wide, two rooms deep, and 2 1/2 stories in height. It probably began as a single cell structure composed of the left hand front rooms and chimney bay, and later extended by the addition of a rear leanto and a second cell to the right of the chimney bay. Ca.
1790, house was enlarged to a full two stories and the roof rebuilt with ridge on the center axis. The exterior reflects the late Second Period updating of the house: clapboard finish, symmetrically placed sash windows with simple enframements and a plain doorway. There is a central chimney. MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES Surviving First Period evidence is found in the left hand front room and chamber. In the left room, the longitudinal summer flat chamfer and taper stops. The end girt is similarly finished. Joist spacing is 22 inches on centers. Whitewash remains on the underside of the ceiling boards. The ceiling was apparently never covered with lathe and plaster, but received a tin covering sometime in the late 19th century, which was removed in 1938.
In the left front chamber, there is an unusual longitudinal summer beam decorated with 1 1/4 inch flat chamfers and taper stops on either side of the joint with the summer beam posts. Plates also have flat chamfers. In the attic, the remaining rafters of an earlier, all principal rafter roof are left in place on the front slope of the current broader roof. There were fourteen rafters in all. bay are hewn. The intermediate rafters of slighter dimensions were saw-mill sawn. These rafters were bridle jointed at the ridge. The original part of the cellar under just the left hand front room has First Period framing, while'the later parts are framed with hewn logs.

LATER SIGNIFICANT FEATURES The left-hand chamber retains a fine fireplace wall of Second Period raised-field panels. The paneling was never painted, but was covered lath and plaster at some point. Trim in the rest of the house, particularly in the front rooms and stair hall, is transitional between the Second and Third periods in style. with A small barn to the north of the house was probably built at the time the house was enlarged to a full 2 stories c. 1790. Roof construction, particularly in the five sided ridge pole configuration, is similar in both structures.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION The building is associated with Peter Noyes, a leader in the settlement (who built the house), and with the Reverend Samuel Parris of Salem Village, (later called Danvers), a prominent figure in the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. Parris, who married the daughter of Peter Noyes, became part owner of the house in the early 1700's and is thought to have visited the house freguently. Between 1733 and 1796, the house belonged to Parris' descendants. REFERENCES Forbes, Harriette M.
