SIGNIFICANCE The Ephraim Buck House, dated by deeds to ca. 1704, shows only minimal physical evidence of its framing. The discovery of a flat chamfer seems to confirm the historical evidence, as do the room proportions themselves. As such, it qualifies for inclusion in the thematic group under Criterion D. It is likely to yield information about early 18th-century framing in this part of Middlesex County. about which little is known because of the low survival rate of buildings from this period.

EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The Ephraim Buck House is now a two room deep, central chimney, five Originally, the house was one room deep, possibly built in two phases, to which was later added the rear range under a completely new roof. At the time of the rear additions a new chimney was located directly behind the site of the original chimney. MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES While the interior was completely remodeled with raised panels and the frame boxed, investigation of one of the longitudinal summer beams, in the first floor right hand room, exposed a flat-chamfered summer beneath the present boxing. No stop could be determined in the investigation. The transverse summer ties in the second floor are also boxed. The rooms, of 17.5' square on either side of the chimney bay, suggest the First Period as well, despite their otherwise boxed and paneled character on both stories.

It is not possible to fully determine whether the house was built originally as a single cell or double cell house, but the 12' wide entry suggests the width of an enlarged chimney bay.
