SIGNIFICANCE The Hart House retains integrity of location, design, materials and workmanship in its surviving late First Period frame and plank construction, making it eligible under criterion C. The paired transverse summer beams in the west side of the house repesent an unusual local framing variant centered in Salem.
Further study of buildings of this type is likely to yield information important to our understanding of early framing techniques, making the house eligible under Criterion D. The plank frame construction is an alternative framing method possibly connected to the exsistence sawmill in the locality, suggesting that further research into early sawn wood distribution in the Lynnfield area would be desirable. EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The Hart House is a 3 bay, 2 1/2 story central chimney structure of plank frame construction with an added rear lean-to which projects 6 feet beyond the east end of the house. It has been restored with new clapboards, wood-shingled roof, and casement windows in their original location. MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES Despite termite damage and extensive restoration, the Hart House exhibits late First Period framing details and decoration in all of its main rooms.
Lynnfield's proximity to Salem is underlined by the twinned transverse summer beams in the first floor west room, a common late First Period Salem feature. The summers, girts, sills, and posts all have flat chamfers; the sills and posts also have simple taper butt-cog joists are 23" apart, indicating a late First Period date. The restored fireplace was originally 5' wide, and has a beehive oven in the right rear corner and evidence of the original lug The reconstruction casement windows were installed in the original locations, indicated by mortise holes in the posts, meant to accommodate window framing members in the plank wall. The east first floor room has an exposed chimney girt with flat chamfer; the transverse summer beam and sills have been replaced. The joists are 23" apart on center; the fireplace is 8' wide.
The lean-to seems to have been added early in the 18th century: ceiling beams are exposed but not chamfered, and the six foot wide fireplace has a beehive oven in the rear right wall. The second floor west chamber has paired transverse summer beams which were cut away for a later plaster ceiling. The exposed falling braces in the southeast, southwest, and northwest corners of the room clearly indicate the house's plank wall construction.
The three posts on the north side of the room are flared, and have simple flat chamfers, as do the chimney girt and end tie beam. The second floor east chamber apparently never had a fireplace. The east end tie has a flat chamfer. There are falling braces on the northeast corner of the north wall and on the southeast corner of the south wall. The east wall has rising braces in each of its corners. The owner has exposed a section of lath nailed to the plank wall in the southwest corner of the room. The steep pitch of the main roof indicates First Period construction. The principal-rafter roof has collar beams on either side of the chimney. The broken angle of the rear roof slope indicates that the lean-to is a later addition.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION Although there has been a documented house on the property since the 1670's, the present house was probably built by John Hiram Perkins, who owned the property from 1694 to 1719.
